How to use the BPM metronome

Set the tempo, choose a time signature, and press play.

  1. Set your tempo

    Type a BPM, drag the slider, or use the +/- buttons to land on the tempo you want. If you have music playing, tap the 'Tap tempo' button in time and the metronome picks up the BPM for you.

  2. Choose a time signature

    Pick 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 or 2/4. The first beat of every bar gets a higher-pitched accent click so you can hear the downbeat without counting.

  3. Press play and practise

    Hit the play button or press space. The beat dots light up in time with the click, and the note-length table underneath shows delay times in milliseconds at your current tempo.

Metronome questions

What tempo range does this metronome cover?
20 BPM to 300 BPM — wide enough for anything from a funeral march to blast-beat practice. You can step in increments of 1 or 5 BPM, or drag the slider to jump.
How does the tap tempo work?
Tap the button in time with the music. After two taps it shows a first estimate; after eight it has settled. Pausing for more than two and a half seconds resets the count, so you can retry without clearing anything manually.
What is the accented beat?
The first beat of every bar plays at a higher pitch so you can hear where each bar starts. In 4/4 that is every fourth click; in 3/4 every third. The matching dot on screen also lights up in a different colour.
Can I use this metronome while analysing a song?
Yes. Find the tempo of a track with the BPM finder, then open the metronome in another tab and type in that number. You can practise along or confirm the detected BPM by ear.
Does the metronome work on phones?
It works in any browser with the Web Audio API, which covers all current mobile browsers. Tap the screen instead of pressing space, and make sure your phone is not on silent mode.
Is the metronome free, and does it need an account?
It is free, runs entirely in your browser, and never asks for an account or any permission. The clicks are generated on your device — nothing is downloaded or uploaded.

When to use the metronome vs. the BPM finder

The metronome is for practising or confirming a tempo you already know — you type in a number and it clicks at that rate. The BPM finder is for discovering the tempo of a recording: drop a file and it reads the BPM to one decimal alongside the musical key.

A common workflow: analyse a track, note the BPM, then open the metronome to practise a part at that tempo — or slow it down five clicks and build back up. If you have no file and just want to count what you hear, the tap BPM counter measures your taps over a longer window for a more precise read.

The metronome generates every click locally using the Web Audio API. It never opens a network connection, never loads a sound file, and sends nothing anywhere — close the tab and it is gone.
